Soonya Thithi – Void Tithis to Avoid

📖 Primary Source: agasthiar.org — It's all in the Timing!

This content is sourced directly from agasthiar.org, the traditional Vedic panchangam (almanac) that Anudinam’s calendar rules are based on. Anudinam computes and personalizes this data for your date and location.

What is Soonya Thithi?

Soonya Thithi (literally “empty” or “void” Thithi) marks a day as weakened or inauspicious for starting new ventures. Unlike Kari Naal (fixed calendar dates), a day can become Soonya Thithi through several different, independent triggers – if any of them apply to that day, it counts as Soonya Thithi. Anudinam checks all of them together and shows “Yes” or “No” for the current date.

What Triggers Soonya Thithi (Universal – applies to everyone)

Trigger Applies When
Thithi Amavasya (New Moon) or Pournami (Full Moon)
Vasaram (weekday) Bhouma (Tuesday) or Guru (Thursday)
Vasaram (weekday, separate rule) Bhanu (Sunday) or Sthira (Saturday)
Nakshatram Bharani, Krithigai, Thiruvadhirai, Aayilyam, Magham, Pooram, Visaakam, Kettai, Moolam, Pooraadam, or Poorattaadhi
Calendar The day is the first day of a new Maasam

Because two of these Vasaram rules alone cover 4 of the 7 weekdays, Soonya Thithi is common – it is a caution flag for that particular day, not a rare event.

Personal Soonya Thithi (Rashi-Based)

Beyond the universal triggers above, your Rashi (birth sign) adds specific extra Thithis that are void for you personally:

On the Anudinam homepage, use the “Select your Rashi” dropdown (shown right under the Soonya Thithi result) to add this personal layer – once set, it’s remembered for future visits and the page will flag “Soonya for your rashi” whenever it applies.
